It’s the end of the year, and Nerd Attack turns four in March. Our portfolio page has 81 entries now. Count the apps we did on three or four platforms only once and it’s about 65 different apps, and most of them are on Nokia phones. That’s what happens when your first break comes from Nokia … so here’s the lot, in one place.

For Nokia

Our first job with Nokia, back in 2009, was designing topApps, the Ovi Store app that went out preloaded on Nokia phones around the world, and we did the update in 2011. Then came the preloads: IS Mobile and Makansutra for SingTel’s Christmas in 2009, five apps for the N8 launch in Malaysia in 2010, Virtual Malaysia, a tourism app for the same launch, and a Sky News video app for the N8’s launch in Australia.

Some were for Nokia itself. The Symbian Anna Updater was part of Nokia’s push to get Symbian owners onto Anna, which was announced in April 2011. App Judgement was for judging Calling All Innovators 2011, Nokia’s developer contest, which had over 800 entries from 57 countries. There’s a Nokia Care app, a SISTIC service for Ovi Maps, and two NFC projects in Singapore in 2011 … One day out on the Circle Line for SMRT, around the time SMRT and Nokia put NFC tags in its stations, and a Bras Basah Bugis trail with the National Heritage Board.

News, a lot of news

News readers are the biggest group by far. Most of the Malaysian papers are in here, the NST, The Star, The Sun, Berita Harian, Harian Metro, Sinar Harian and malaysiakini, plus our own Headlines for Malaysia, Singapore and the UK. The NST and The Star have been through MeeGo, S40 and Windows Phone 7 with us. We also did four of Fairfax’s papers in Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times and WAtoday.

Since July

Since July we’ve also been designing for the telcos. For DiGi we designed an account app for Windows 8, months before Windows 8 came out at the end of October … your bill, your usage and DiGi Rewards, with a live tile that flips over to show how much credit or data you have left, and a toast when you’re close to your data cap.

A Windows 8 Start screen mockup with a DiGi live tile showing a usage summary of 1.2 out of 2 GB remaining, among sample mail, calendar, photo and Store tiles
DiGi's account app on the Windows 8 Start screen, July.
The DiGi Rewards screen in the Windows 8 mockup: five health and beauty deals as tiles, with a filter menu open on Health and Beauty and State, Category and Merchant filters at the bottom
DiGi Rewards.

For DiGi’s CallerTunes we mocked up an iPhone app to browse the charts, preview a tune and buy it. And for Maxis there’s Push, a proof of concept on the iPhone where you subscribe to content, free or paid, and it gets pushed to your phone every day.

CallerTunes home screen: a Girls Generation banner, a New and Noteworthy list with Payphone by Maroon 5, and tabs for Home, Charts, Free Tunes and RM1 TunesThe CallerTunes preview player: Jingle Bell Rock by Justin Bieber, marked free, with a progress bar at 0:17 of 0:30The CallerTunes purchase screen: Subscribe to Payphone by Maroon 5 for RM3, with a Purchase button

Maxis Push main screen: covers of Malay novels, a horror story, dating tips and a popcorn icon on wooden shelvesMaxis Push subscription screen: The Italian Horror at RM3 a month, with Subscribe and Cancel buttons and a note that content will be pushed each dayMaxis Push shelves after subscribing, with two covers labelled Bought and red badges counting new content
Maxis Push, November.

Count the platforms and it’s Symbian, MeeGo, S40, Windows Phone, Android, iOS and now Windows 8. Most of it is still Nokia, but this year more of it moved to Android and the iPhone, with Tap to Order and KLTraffic.
